New Features

I’ve once again ripped up the innards of Inventing Situations to make minor changes on the front end. This time the change is a little more noticeable. I’ve modernized the way input is validated so we’re more in keeping with the way the rest of the web has been working since about 1999.

(1) There’s client side validation, so you’ll get a warning alert as soon as you hit submit if you’re trying to do something really silly, like submit an empty post.

(2) If you have some more subtle problem, like a word that’s too long it won’t be picked up until after you post to the sever, but the form will be redrawn with the error message and whatever you’ve already typed, instead of giving you an error message on an essentially blank page forcing you to hit the back button. I ‘inherited’ the unfriendly validation from another capping site that I was aspiring to be like.

(3) I’ve finally done away with the inconsistency of how spaces in handles are handled.

Namely, instead of accepting them but not saving them properly with the ‘remember me’ function, I’m now limiting handles to letters, numbers and the underscore, just as I’m doing over at Wasting Precious Time. I apologize to those of you with spaces in your handles, but as I move forward, I want to make some use of the user registration function on Inventing Situations too, and never fully intended to support spaces in handles.

    Hi Gerson,

[Resolved bug report removed per user's request, 7/5/6]
Again, I want to thank you for whatever changes you made in the code that enabled me (and my sister devildoll aka Becky) to download “Are You Happy In Your Work?”, and for developing and maintaining this wonderful alternative to CT that has helped to keep the gang together after SciFi left us aching for air. For some reason, Becky and I have trouble accessing GlitterRock’s site, so IS is it for us. We both very much appreciate your efforts.

If anybody else is having this mysterious submit problem, please let me know the following -
What OS & browser are you using?
Are you sure the enter key isn’t in the magic combo?
Maybe tabbing to the submit button?
And of course, if you can find the exact key combo, that would be really helpful.

Is this blog solely going to be about IS and WPT, or will it branch out into all things MST3K?

The focus will indeed be my captioning sites with occasional forays into the general world of captioning. I have one idea for a running theme that is tangentially related to captioning, more on that if and when it’s launched. If I get a bee in my bonnet on some other subject I may digress, and MST may well be one of those subjects - since it does occupy a special place in the capping world. On the other hand, there’s just not that much new under the sun in their neighborhood.

But, the main idea here is to keep folks informed and involved about what’s happening on sector7g-zz9 and get their feedback. And once my current burst of activity on site improvement ends, to give me an impetus to keep improving (”I got to add something to the site so I have something to blog about!”)
