At last it can be revealed, I’m trying to put together a book with some of my favorite captions from Inventing Situations. I mean a real live honest to goodness you-can-go-into-a-bookstore-and-buy it book. I’m going to need everybody’s help in making this happen. I can already hear you asking “what’s in it for me?” In brief:
- A chance to see your caption (and name and/or handle) in print. Maybe possibly. No guarantees. (The book will probably have around 300 captions gathered from IS’ four plus years. In the last week alone, there were close to 7,000 captions from over 100 cappers*. You do the math.)
- A chance to see some of your favorite captions that other people wrote in print.
- Spreading the joy of capping.
- That warm fuzzy feeling that I hear comes with helping another human being. You know, one who’s so kindly run this site for so many years.
So, now that I’ve told you why you should help, here’s how you can help:
- Links links links. The better my stats, the better the chance of a publisher accepting the books. Here’s a page with some nice link buttons to use. Link to IS on your gallery, blog or other website. Link to it in your favorite forum. Stand on street corners handing out fliers with the URL. I’m still not running a link exchange around here – but notice there’s still a lot of room on the blogroll.
- Permission. It’s still a little early going to know for sure who I’ll need permission from, but since my old policy was to let cappers retain the rights to their caps, I’ll probably need permission to print those caps. If you want to give me a verbal ok just in case, drop me a line at book@sector7g-zz9.com. [Edit 7/4/6: I'm not looking for anything legally binding just yet, mostly I just want to know that you'd sign something something legally binding if asked. Yeah, I'm confused too.] If you’ve got loads of email addresses of old cappers, let me know that too.
- Putting up with my new copyright policy.

I’m getting a 404 on the copyright policy.

Ditto: 404 Page Not Found appears within the Inventing Time framework, where specific page content should be.
(we all do that – we who build websites. when i first started off, i thought i never would make a mistake of that kind. too late now.)

Fixed the link. Thx.

Does this preclude the use of captions elsewhere (e.g. in online caption galleries)? If so, that’s going to be a tough sell (plus all but impossible to enforce).

I’m no lawyer or publishing company, but I’m pretty sure the legal principle of “protect it or lose it” applies to trademarks, not copyrights, so I’ll just say the purpose of this change isn’t to let me go after galleries.

I’m confused by this phrase “Permission is granted for non-profit re-use by the authors”
Does this mean that permission is granted to IS “by the authors”, or does this mean that permission is granted by IS to the authors to reuse their own captions, but not for profit?

I just rewrote the policy. See here for a long boring answer: http://sector7g-zz9.com/it/2006/07/28/more-on-caption-copyright/

Wow, I’m a Johnny-Post-Lately on this, but feel free to cull as many captions from my 500+ gallery for your book project. Just be sure to give me a “Special Thanks”. And a photo on the dust jacket. AND one of my captions on the cover. AND I get to hump your mailbox.
Yours in Satan,
Zee
