Share Your Thoughts

Since the Turkey Week graffiti wall went over pretty well, I’m giving into popular demand and leaving this open thread for people to leave messages to other cappers on, stuff like “Stepping out to steal the neighbor’s paper, back in ten minutes”, “will you marry me?”, “my hovercraft is full of eels”, or just the simple approriatconventional “I saw Elvis in my bathroom today”. The thread will be pruned, archived and/or replaced as appropriate.

Note: Inventing Situations and its subsidiaries do not condone the theft of your neighbor’s paper.

How did you know my hovercraft was scratched?

“I will not buy this caption site. It is scratched.”

  2. Fred Says:

“Was full of eels,” I meant. Or maybe scratched, too. It gets a workout, that hovercraft.

  3. Zonk Says:

It said to leave a comment, and I’m extremely vulnerable to suggestion.

  4. UpSky2 Says:

I hope the suggestion was kind to your vulnerabilities, Zonk.

Allow me to point out that the best recipe for stuffing involves leaving it (covered) in the fridge for 3 days or so after preparing it, in order for the celery and onions to percolate their mutual flavors and juices into each other. IMHO.

By the way, I’ve been to Istanbul. It’s in Turkey, you know. …. Just sharing. (….Sharing is caring, right?)

And, I prefer apple pie, cherry pie, raisin pie, mince pie if there’s no citrus peel in it, as well as pumpkin pie, turkey &/or chicken pie, pot pie (hold the pots though), and of course wild berry pie homemade is best.

What happened to everyone? I saw some familiar faces when I dropped by Saturday the 16th/17th, but not many, and it looked like everyone had blown out by 3 am or thereabouts.

If I don’t see anyone before then (and if this evening is any indication, I won’t), happy holidays to all.

  6. GersonK Says:

That’s a good question. I know I had to be up at a reasonable hour and had some personal distractions. Not sure why everybody else left early/didn’t show. But it’s not like most of the night shift notices anything other than the grabs and the gallery or comes by on weekdays, so don’t expect them to explain it here. Besides, if people had stuck around til their usual hour, they might’ve noticed JediClone had requested Horror Hotel, thereby becoming aware of the request system themselves.

    Happy New Year…have a great 2007.

  9. McFrenzy Says:

I stepped out to ask my neighbor to marry me when I noticed the morning paper had been stolen from behind my hovercraft in which I keep Elvis’ second favorite food, deep fried eel sandwiches.

  10. UpSky2 Says:

I am aware of the request mechanism, and have used it. The ability to label one’s sponsorship w/appropriate or dumb comments-in-brief is particularly gratulational.

I have used the rating system, after figuring out *how* to… Question, does rating a grab set highly influence when / how soon it is next shown?

(Here’s a really crazy idea for the ol’ IS website: what about the option to sign up for notification email, sent only @ beginning of and not in middle of nor end of a … period when there is high capping-activity or ‘traffic’ @ IS? so dedicated cappers could drop everything and scram over to join the fun ?? yeah, notification emails can be tiresome. - So?? Caption This suggestion all you want, it’s big enough to stand up for itself. ;)

PS: Though pie is good, useful technology that is pleasant and painless ( UTTIPP ) is also something I like.

  11. GersonK Says:

    (1) Some tweaks to the rating interface are bubbling towards the top of my todo list. Possibly moving it to the “now playing” box that appears on the top of all pages while the movie’s playing, rather than on the movie page itself.

    (2) For movies with a “substantial” number of votes, I may give them more than two showings in a rotation if they’re highly rated, or rest them every other rotation if they’re rated low. Right now, no movie is near having enough votes to qualify, and until I improve the interface, I don’t think any will.

    (3) The high-traffic notification’s an interesting idea. The devil would be in the details - deciding what qualifies as high traffic and how long to wait between notifications.

  12. UpSky2 Says:

RE (3) how long to wait between: A. Not every 5 seconds, one notification’s enough for a while. B. Observation: when there’s a ‘gathering’ or unscheduled high-traffic occasion @ IS, it seems to me that the numbers peak fairly gradually and then fall off more rapidly, but don’t fluctuate up-&-down a whole lot… so: C. use the ‘monostable’ concept, where rising above a certain level triggers a notification… and then further notifications are disabled until traffic falls below a certain other level slightly below the first & for a considerable period of time or sizeable sampling interval
….e.g. tentatively C-1 = four cappers making average one caption each per two minutes twenty seconds, C-2 = three cappers (or less) making one caption each per three minutes thirty seconds or less for about 5 or 10 minutes.
Reaction time factor to any notification email would determine granularity or quantum size of sampling rate/interval - I suggest four minutes at least and twelve minutes at most for the interval at which assessments are made as to traffic density… for C-1 or C-2, readjust my ‘2 min 20 sec’ and ‘3 min 30 sec’ for conformity to whatever sampling interval is chosen.

C-1 and C-2 levels above would determine ‘what qualifies as high traffic’ - but I haven’t ever viewed statistics systematically from IS, so they may be ‘way off as estimates… adjusted so as to average one notification email per day or two days might be about right (or a little more frequent, after all they’d be voluntary-sign-up-to-receive only.)

    Cheers.

  13. GersonK Says:

Note to everyone who’s not planning to write the notification system: you may want to just skim that last comment. Though if you’re reading this, you either figured that out or it’s too late for that.

Umm, we’ll be showing an episode of Dick Tracy at 1:30 AM, but that’s part of the regular schedule.

I’ve heard tell that others are planning a shindig here on the 18th or 25th, but am sort of in the dark about that right now.

Even though your Inventing Situations website says I can still cap without having to use a password, it will not allow me to do so. Why? This is Sunday 25 mar 07.

Sorry, I decided to confuse the fraction of people who’d been clever enough to register at WPT rather than confuse the larger group of people who hadn’t. I chose poorly. The kinks in the account retrieval system have been resolved. I hope.
