YOU CAN STILL CAP WITHOUT A PASSWORD (if you’ve never registered)
I just felt that was the first thing I had to say. I know some people are going to freak when they see that password box. But if you leave it blank, and you’ve never registered at sector7g-zz9 or lustforlunch, you can cap just the same as you always have.
Anyway, inspired by equal parts competition, thinking about updates, and procrastination, I’ve finally finished the long promised use of WPT handles on IS. Of course it turned out that 90% of the remaining work was on tweaking the page layouts and a single bug. I hope it’s all pretty self-explanatory. If you want to protect your handle, register it. All that requires is a working email account (and they’re free and plentiful these days), and a minute. From there on, you’ll just have to occasionally enter your password along with your cap. You can still use whatever unregistered handles you want at any time. If you want a link to your capper wiki profile, once you’ve logged on, you can go to your profile link (it’ll be on the upper left of the screen, just under the mothership menu), and enter your wiki profile.
I also made a few other small fixes, including eliminating a weird wrap around that would occasionally happen with the paypal ad, and sending you back to the gallery after mailing a caption.

I can’t get in IS.

When I try to post a cap, it says I need to log in. So, I went to the page to try to reset my password. It says my username does not exist. So I try to register, and it says that the username is in use already.
I know I registered the name long ago, but can’t remember the password.

You can retrieve your account with this page provided you still have access to the email account you registered with.

That’s actually the page I tried, but it says I don’t exist, no matter which information I enter (username or email).

Ok, I just fixed it. Sorry about that, a bug crept into that page a while back due to security fixes. Of course. Really should’ve doublechecked it before this change, but of course it wasn’t touched by *this* change.

Works now. Thanks so much! I’ve said it before, but I’m gonna say it again–Gerson, you rock the world! (And don’t forget it!)

I know you’re SAYing we can cap without a password. I, however, cannot.
It will not post my caps. I’m wondering why…???

Hey Cam, I believe you can cap without a password only if your handle isn’t registered. If you registered your handle at Wasting Precious Time, that handle will now require a password to use on Inventing Situations. Makes sense to me… that’s how we did it back in the Caption This! days, and this just allows us cappers a little ownership of our handles. While I’ve never even thought that somebody else would use my handle… let’s face it, we may be a loose conglomerate of loons, but we’re still a tightknit community of trustworthy cool people. I think the only time there’s been a handle hijacking is every once in a while when somebody pops up as Miranda Ramsey.

There was also the whole ****i debacle (I dare not say the name), where the person would change one letter and basically steal another capper’s name. Thankfully, that hasn’t happened here. Just Mrs. Ramsey’s general weirdness.

(I knew MirandaRamsey had Iverson and Jeff, but I hadn’t heard of General Weirdness as being among her friends. He should get back to the war instead of messin’ with the menage.;)

Unfortunately, one of the new system’s drawbacks is that it can’t protect against similar looking handles. I think systems that do so automatically are pretty rare, and this isn’t Fort Knox. (Deep down, I acknowledge that this security is just a little better than nothing - it will get better, and it helps me offer things like the profile link, which I also hope to make easier) .
Ultimately people have to look at a handle closley before they decide who to get pissed off at. The rules of the net are that ServoDude54 and ServoDude58 would be different people, and around here GersonK with an oh and Gers0nK with a zero can be two different people (for the time being). GersOnK on the other hand would be me. Well, actually nobody can cap as GersOnK because of the case sensitivity thing. I’m looking into that.

Actually, I thought the similar looking handles thing was a hoot. Once we spotted the clever changes (I went by another1one, the number 1 was changed into a lowercase L, which looked similar in that font. Another poster has some numbers in his handle reversed.)
One thing is for sure.. Cappers can find humor in the strangest things. ;-)
Also - thanks for finally adding handle registration! I think it’s the best new addition yet. I love that IS is always being improved. :-)
