Cinematic Titanic Spoiler Thread

Since even some of us who ordered it three weeks ago haven’t gotten it yet, it’ll probably be midweek until all the early orderers have it and had a chance to watch. So, if you have it and want to share some thoughts that might spoil jokes for us poor saps, do it here. If you have a more general point, do it over here.

My thoughts (added 1/15 8:14 AM):
- Most of the riffing was sharp and had lots of laughs, though the clunkers seemed to clunk a little harder than usual.
- The new Shadowrama’s an impressive achievement. Going from the torsos of two puppets and one person to the full bodies of five people while actually giving a better view of the screen.
- Five riffers never made it too busy and there were a few moments of singing and ‘audience’ reaction where it gave it a neat crowd feel that none of the other mst3k projects have had.
- I do miss them having characters to ‘hide’ behind. Losing the bots’ naiveté hurt.
- Mary Jo seemed to really be trying to give it the ‘woman’s point of view’ a lot. It’s nice to have, and certainly cool that they can do lines for the female movie characters without falsetto, but I hope she doesn’t overplay it or get pigeonholed.
- The vomiting. Well, yes, at least it was only in silhouette and even then no visible ejecta, and featured an obscure (to me) jazz reference, and it also wasn’t Frank in fishnets and high heels. But still, kind of juvenile for them.
- The host segments were a little short and weak. Much as I’m somebody who bemoaned the (perceived?) decrease in movie related segments in later years, this format seems to make it very difficult for them to do anything but, which is sort of limiting.

In short, it was a solid first effort, if you can spare the cash, buy it - this thing deserves our cash.

Waiting’s a bitch, eh Gerson? Don’t worry, the DVD’s haven’t made their way to Brooklyn, either.

The DVD is round and it revolves very quickly in my DVD player.

You’ve spoiled it, you spoiler! Wait, even if mine hadn’t arrived in the mail today, that wouldn’t have spoiled it. You should take some lessons in this spoiling thing.

edited - used my webmaster’s pergoative to move my mini review to where more people would see it.

i kinda felt like i didn’t know what was going on. why are they there? what are they on those stairs for? it could have used a set up or something.

then again, if there is no reason and they are just there riffing that would be cool too. it’s just a tad odd seeing as to how it’s a new thing, i guess (when i saw my first couple of mst’s i didn’t have a clue what was happening but after three or so everything was groovy).

it is a keeper though! i was gut busting all over the place!
‘never saw the movie before so that rocked too!

i’d give kudos but i’m not sure how you spell it.

  5. HanoverF Says:

Seemed to start off slow, and end kinda meh, but the chewy center was gold. I’d rate it around a middling Joel episode of MST. Or an excellent Mike episode. :P (Fight! Fight! Fight!). The special guest (non vomiting one) stole the show.

Hope it isn’t too long until the next one.

  6. GersonK Says:

An excellent Mike episode? I guess they might have snuck a few past me.

As for the lack of premise, from the bits and pieces scattered over their site, it appears that they’re simply preserving mankind’s greatest legacy - movie riffing - and sticking it into a time capsule. Of course, more plot details will probably slowly unfold, since apparently Joel’s fast fingers, shadowrama and the side angle hid the fact that the time tube’s combination is 4 8 15 16 23 42.

  7. Snard Says:

Hello everyone, who haven’t seen me in ages and probably don’t remember me anymore.

On the strength of the reviews here, I’ve ordered the disc too. I’ll let you know when I get it.

how did you find out the tube’s combo?

If that was really, REALLY Stephen Hawking, he has become my new personal hero. His appearance on screen shocked me before I burst into laughter. That was, for me, the highlight of the episode.

Points (RE the My Thoughts part), not spoilery (since I have no DVD player [yet - I gave/sold my only one to a client for a repair and haven't gotten a replacement yet] and no friends to, I CANT spoil it, too-bad-4-me):

    - They’re old pros, so of course the riffing’s still sharp. The only one I know of who’s lost that is 144b - it seems not to survive one’s decease very well.

    - Crow and Tom Servo are gone, and have been moved past. (Besides, that, they’d require a shop, since they’re mechanical. Plus all those variations. - Anyone want to donate shop time, materials, to C.Titanic? [you could become famous??] - “I didn’t think so”)

    - If Mr. Creosote can do it, why can’t they?

    - [The MESSAGE!:] Shortcomings may be precisely that, caused by that: if the cash can be spared. Starting up a biz is uncertain… commercially, MST3K be dead(ish) and C.Titanic is a new biz albeit a variant.

Stephen Hawking? he would be hard to fake: look closely and see if he has the characteristic visual ‘look’ of one who doesn’t use any of his muscles much, a sort of slackness or flabbiness. I doubt they’d be able to find a double w/Gehrig’s or anything similar.
He’s anyone’s hero: He was supposed to be a deader more than three decades ago. Still alive? that’s the wow. Small matters like explaining the universe come second.

  12. GersonK Says:

Not to be a spoilersport, but check the credits, t’aint Stevie H. Oh, and I’m surprised that nobody (myself included) has mentioned the early use of an oooold joke and capper favorite - $20.

Maybe I was a little harsh on the vomiting. But the Brains are not Python and it seemed more plain old gratuitous as opposed to the purposefully gratuitous Creosote, where the excessiveness was half the point. But now we’ve analyzed the humor and killed it. Thanks. Besides, I felt the need to be *cough* fair and balanced, since I’d have probably been pretty harsh on rifftrax/FC for doing the same. But they probably would have had more fluid and less elan.

I didn’t think they could get the real Mr. Hawking. That’s cool. As far as I’m concerned, the joke is still funny.

    Question, *spoiler* question, please:

Does C.Titanic/Oozing Skull have a ’stinger’ at the end???

PS: I really think that the ‘I dont care!’ stinger for ‘Time of the Apes’ isn’t the best choice… check out

  17. Snard Says:

Hey, maybe I missed this from an earlier thread, but does anyone know if there’s a way to print a DVD case cover/insert for this? The disk itself looks pretty, but I don’t plan to store it in the mailer envelope forever. I notice that the EZTakes Download Manager gives you the ability to print DVD inserts and such, but that only appears to be available for downloaded videos.

    Many thanks,

    - Snard

  18. GersonK Says:

The advantadges of being a late adopter: snard orders it 24 days after I do, and gets it 3 days after I do.

There are a few fan made covers floating around the net. I think Joel or somebody from the project said they were going to make nice official ones for the downloads, not sure how they’ll feel about those being shared, or if they’ll actually happen.

Don’t think there was a stinger, but maybe I blacked out.
